Car accident fatality rates are highest in rural areas

Many of those who live in rural areas assume they are safer when they drive on those seemingly wide-open roads than when they drive in a chaotic, packed city. However, studies of the statistics show that the exact opposite is true. It's far safer to drive in urban areas or major population centers than it is in the country. The fatal accident rates make this all too clear.

If you look at a map of the United States overlayed with accident fatality rates, you find that the regions with the highest rates are in the Great Plains and the Deep South. Places like Mississippi, Alabama and Montana have very high rates, whereas places like New York and California have very low rates.

These states may have higher death totals because of their high populations, but that doesn't tell you much about how common deadly accidents are. It just reflects how many people live there. In low-population areas, accident fatality rates soar.

Pennsylvania, as it turns out, ranks in the middle. Some of your risk may just come down to where you drive. This is a massive state with wide-open farmlands, rolling mountains and dense city centers. The state falls into the middle because these things tend to balance each other out.

Of course, no matter where you drive, you need to be careful and remember that you face some serious risks. Your life may be in the hands of the drivers around you. If they make mistakes that lead to serious injuries for you, then you need to know how to seek compensation.
