Worried that your doctor isn't listening?

One of the most common complaints that people have when they visit the doctor is that their doctor isn't really listening to them. The doctor may seem distracted or busy, just rushing to get them in and out of the office. They're not sure that they're actually getting the level of medical care they deserve.

If you feel this way and it's frustrating, here are a few things you can do:

  • Tell stories. Don't just give one-word answers. For instance, just telling your doctor that you have chest pain is one thing, but explaining when it started and how it happened slows the conversation down, gives them more information and can get them to listen more intently.
  • Write down what you want to say or ask. Don't let the doctor rush through the conversation and usher you out of the room before you've said everything that you came there to say.
  • Ask questions. Don't assume that you just have to provide information. Asking your doctor questions keeps their focus on you and the conversation.
  • Be kind and courteous. Remember that doctors are busy. Being rude won't get them to listen better. Instead, respect their time and be friendly as you talk. Building that relationship can help them care about you and listen to what you have to say.

Doing these things can help, but the truth is that doctors will always be busy and it can be hard to get them to focus on your specific needs. If this attitude leads to substandard medical care, you may need to look into your legal options.
