The common causes of truck accidents

Television shows and commercials routinely show people driving in an unsafe manner. However, the truth is that doing so in real life could cause harm to drivers, passengers and pedestrians in Pennsylvania and throughout the country. According to the 2007 Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS), large trucks were to blame in 44% of the 963 accident cases researchers analyzed. One of the main causes of accidents involving large trucks was driving too fast for road conditions.

Those who drive too fast for road conditions were almost seven times more likely to be blamed for causing an accident. Ideally, large trucks will move up to 50% slower on roads that are wet or covered in snow than they would on dry roads. The LTCCS also found that drivers who were unfamiliar with their surroundings were more likely to be an accident than those who knew where they were.

Ideally, large truck operators will resist the urge to figure it out as they go and instead take some time to plan their route before they leave. Another common cause of large truck crashes according to the LTCCS was brake failure. Operating a large motor vehicle can be dangerous enough when the brakes are not working properly. However, it can be even more dangerous to drive at high speeds with brakes that are worn or are otherwise defective.

Occupants of other vehicles who are hurt in truck accidents often require lengthy periods of expensive medical treatment. If it can be determined that the crash was due to the negligence of the truck driver or trucking company, an attorney could be of assistance in obtaining compensation for the losses that have been sustained.
