Decreasing fatalities from crashes for 2nd year in a row

Pennsylvania drivers will be interested in the slight decrease in fatalities from traffic accidents for the second year in a row. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatalities fell 2.4% in 2018, after significant increases in 2015 and 2016.

The NHTSA believes the decrease might be due in part to new vehicles with improved technology that helps prevents crashes. The previous increase was partially attributed to an improving economy and more cars on the road. The decrease seems to be continuing, as there was a 3.4% decrease in fatalities during the first half of 2019.

Other fatalities, such as pedestrian and cyclists, however, have continued to increase. Pedestrian fatalities rose 3.4% in 2018. Fatalities for cyclist and others using similar vehicles rose 6.3%. The NHTSA reports that 76% of the pedestrian deaths and 50% of the cycling fatalities occurred after dark. In some cases, the pedestrians had also been drinking alcohol. The increase in these deaths might also be due to the higher number of SUVs on the road. SUVs sit higher than cars and might provide more difficulty for drivers to see pedestrians or cyclists. Fatal truck accidents also saw a small increase of almost 1%. However, fatal truck accidents have continued to increase over the last decade by 46.5%.

According to the NHTSA, most of the fatalities from traffic collisions are preventable, so education is necessary to prevent these accidents and lower the rates of fatalities. Additionally, the agency is considering new technologies that might help with preventing pedestrian deaths.

People who have been injured in a car accident caused by the negligence of another driver often require extensive medical care and treatment. They might find it advisable to have the help of an attorney when seeking compensation for their losses.
