The rise in big-rig crash fatalities

Road Safe America has released its analysis of federal crash data pertaining to deaths caused by big-rig trucks. According to the data, Pennsylvania ranked fifth in states had the highest number of truck crash fatalities in 2017.

The analysis also revealed that there was a rise in big-rig crash fatalities in 44 states between 2009 and 2017. The statistics show that the number of miles that were traveled by heavy commercial trucks dropped slightly even as the number of crashes involving the heavy commercial trucks rose.

In a news release, the organization reported that during that 35,882 people were killed in these crashes during that period. According to the co-founder of the organization, laws that required the use of automatic emergency braking technologies and existing speed limiting would have prevented a large number of the deaths. The other four states that had the highest number of truck crash deaths in 2017 were Texas, Florida, Georgia and California. The states that had the largest percentage increases from 2009 to 2017 in the number of truck crash fatalities were Nevada, Texas, Colorado, Idaho and Washington.

The majority of the states in the top five list have truck speed limits that are at least 70 miles per hour. The co-founder of Road Safe America states that big rigs that can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and more should not be allowed to be driven at such high speeds because they are unable to come to a stop in an emergency in the same distance as the other vehicles that occupy the road.

Truck driver negligence is often the cause of truck accidents. Occupants of other vehicles who have been injured in a collision caused by a speeding or distracted truck driver might want to meet with an attorney to learn about how best to seek compensation for the losses that they have incurred.
