Could you have a brain injury?

Broken bones, cuts and scratches are visible injuries that people generally seek immediate treatment for, but some injuries are not so obvious, but require immediate medical attention, too. In fact, many of the most serious injuries are not readily apparent at all. Brain injuries in particular can be extremely severe and dangerous, but their symptoms might not always be as obvious.

If you were recently involved in a car accident, you might have suffered a brain injury without even realizing it. These injuries can have serious consequences but sometimes their symptoms do not appear immediately or obviously.

Signs of a brain injury

Unfortunately, brain injuries are not uncommon after car accidents. There are many different potential symptoms, both physical and psychological, that could indicate you suffered a traumatic brain injury. Loss of consciousness, headaches, nausea and vomiting are all physical symptoms of a brain injury. Fatigue, speech problems, sensitivity to light and dizziness are also possible symptoms.

Psychological issues can also indicate a brain injury. Memory loss and problems concentrating are a few psychological signals you could have a traumatic brain injury. Mood changes, depression or anxiousness are other symptoms.

More severe symptoms of a brain injury include:

  • Loss of consciousness for long periods of time
  • Constant or persistent headaches
  • Seizures
  • Weakness or numbness in limbs, fingers or toes
  • Inability to stay awake or wake up from sleep
  • Slurred speech
  • Confusion or unusual behavior

What should you do?

If you exhibit any of these symptoms after an accident, especially more severe indications of a brain injury, you should seek medical attention immediately. Having a medical professional examine you could help you avoid potentially life-threatening  consequences.

Brain injuries are serious and should not be ignored, no matter how minor the accident was. Suffering a brain injury can produce long-term consequences, but they can be avoided with diligent care.
